The "City of Destiny" is located in Santa Clara County, California and is one of the chief cities that make up Silicon Valley. The city is bordered by the San Francisco Bay to the north, Mountain View to the west, Santa Clara to the east, and Cupertino to the south. Founded in 1912, Sunnyvale became a charter city in 1949. It extends for twenty-four square miles. It is the second largest city in Santa Clara County and the fifth largest in the San Francisco Bay Area.

According to the census of 2000, there were 131,760 people residing in Sunnyvale. The racial makeup of the city was 53.27% White, 15.48% Hispanic or Latino of any race, 2.22% African American, 0.46% Native American, 32.27% Asian, 0.32% Pacific Islander, 7.19% from other races, and 4.25% from two or more races.

The median income for a household was $74,409, and the median income for a family was $81,634. The per capita income for the city was $36,524.
